OXFORD, Ohio (AP) Chet Mason scored 16, and Danny Horace had 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead Miami to an 81-71 win over Purdue Friday.

After taking a 5-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game, the Redhawks never trailed.

Miami (1-0) made their first seven 3-pointers, and finished 14-for-20 on the night from beyond the arc to spoil the season opener for Boilermaker coach Gene Keady, who's in his final season at Purdue.

Carl Landry had 25 points and 16 rebounds for Purdue (0-1) and Brandon McKnight had 19. The Boilermakers lost an opener for only the fifth time in Keady's 25 years as head coach.

All five Miami starters scored in double figures, with Monty St. Clair adding 14 and Nathan Peavy and William Hatcher each scoring 10. Freshman Chad Troyer added 11 points off the bench, all in the second half. St. Clair also had six steals.

The RedHawks hit 10 of their first 13 field goals to start the game, while racing to a 38-18 lead with 6:30 to go in the first half.

The Boilermakers used a 15-3 second half run to get within 52-44 with 13:39 left in the game, but Miami countered with seven unanswered points to keep the game at arms' length.

Keady, 68, considered leaving Purdue for the University of San Francisco in the offseason, but decided to return for what he said will be his 25th and final season. Matt Painter came over from Southern Illinois to serve as his assistant, and will take over next season.

During Keady's tenure, Purdue has won six Big Ten titles and made 17 NCAA tournament appearances. His teams have won at least 20 games 14 times, but not since the 1999-2000 season.
