CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Devin Smith scored 16 points and freshman point guard Sean Singletary had seven assists in his much-anticipated debut as Virginia opened its season with an 88-55 victory over Robert Morris.
The Cavaliers scored the game's first 14 points and were never threatened as they coasted to a 49-18 halftime lead.
Singletary, the high school player of the year last year in Philadelphia, has been touted as the answer to the point guard problems that plagued the Cavaliers throughout most of coach Pete Gillen's first six seasons. He started ahead of sophomore T.J. Bannister, who was erratic early last season but played better down the stretch as Virginia went 18-13.
Singletary, who had only two turnovers in 25 minutes, joined a starting lineup that included an all-senior frontcourt of Smith, Elton Brown and Jason Clark. Smith was 7-of-12 as the Cavaliers shot 53 percent while holding Robert Morris (1-2) to 32 percent.
Brown had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Clark scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. J.R. Reynolds was 3-for-4 on 3-pointers and finished with 15 points.
Mark Anderson was the only Robert Morris player in double figures with 14 points. Joseph Ison had 10 rebounds.
