NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) Greg Jenkins had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Iona never trailed in a 73-49 victory over St. Bonaventure on Friday night.
Iona (2-1) led 9-2 after Jenkins' layup 2:11 into the game. The Bonnies had only one field goal, a jumper by Ahmad Smith that tied the score 2-all, in the opening 10:19 and fell behind 17-9.
The Gaels went on a a 37-27 halftime advantage and continued to pull away. They created their first 20-point margin when Jenkins hit a foul shot to make it 58-38 with 7:27 left.
Steve Burtt had 11 points and Ricky Soliver added nine for Iona. Soliver had nine of his team's 23 assists. Reserve swingman Wade Dunston paced St. Bonaventure with 22 points, including 15 of 16 free throws.
St. Bonaventure had won eight consecutive season openers. Five of the 11 players on the Bonniers' roster were playing in their first Division I game.
