WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) Chris Oliver scored 21 points and Olumuyiwa Popoola's free throw with 1:15 left provided the winning margin as Radford defeated Yale 72-71 Friday night in the first round of the William & Mary Tip-Off Classic.
Radford (1-0) twice led by eight in the second half, the last time on Popoola's 3-pointer with 3:38 remaining to make it 71-63. Edwin Draughan hit back-to-back jumpers in an 8-0 run as the Bulldogs pulled even at 71-71, the eighth tie of the game, with 1:42 left.
After Popoola hit one of two free throws, Yale (0-1) twice had opportunities to take the lead. But Alex Gamboa turned the ball over with 54 seconds left, and Sam Kaplan missed from the top of the key with 15 seconds remaining.
Oliver was 9-o-f14 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, as the Highlanders shot 50 percent to Yale's 39 percent.
Whit Holcomb-Faye added 16 points and Popoola 12 for Radford.
Gamboa led Yale with 16 points, followed by Draughan with 13 and Dominick Martin with 11.
