NEW YORK (AP) Tory Cavalieri scored 11 of his team's final 14 points and made a layup with 26 seconds remaining to give St. Francis a 53-52 victory Tuesday night over St. John's.

The Terriers (1-1) spoiled the night for St. John's, which renamed its basketball venue from Alumni Hall to Carnesecca Arena - in honor of former Red Storm coach Lou Carnesecca. St. Francis had lost all 22 of its previous games at Alumni Hall, and improved to 12-59 overall against St. John's.

Carnesecca, 79, was 526-200 in his 24 years as the head coach at St. John's. He retired after the 1991-92 season and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992.

Allan Sheppard added 12 points for St. Francis.

Lamont Hamilton led the Red Storm (1-1) with 13 points. Daryll Hill and Dexter Gray added 10 apiece.

St. Francis, which trailed 21-19 at the break, opened the second half with a 20-10 run to gain its biggest lead at 39-31. Cavalieri made a pair of 3-pointers during the spurt.

St. John's trailed by three points when Cedric Jackson made two straight jumpers to put the Red Storm ahead 52-51 with one minute left.

That set the stage for Cavalieri's winning layup.
