PHILADELPHIA (AP) Phil Goss scored 15 points to lead Drexel to a 57-49 win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday night, sending the Hawks to their second loss of the season and matching last year's total.
Drexel (2-2) snapped a 14-game losing streak against the Hawks and beat them for the first time since Dec. 13, 1987, also at the Palestra. Saint Joe's still leads the series 41-6.
The long-suffering Drexel fans mocked Saint Joe's motto, chanting "The Hawk Is Dead!" but security pushed back students attempting to rush the court.
Bashir Mason added 11 points for the Dragons, who shot 41 percent in the second half.
Dwayne Jones had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Saint Joseph's (1-2). With Saint Joe's taking wild shots and misfiring on long jumpers - Jones even missed a dunk - this was the harshest proof yet these aren't the same Hawks that went 30-2 last year and advanced to the NCAA regional final.
The Dragons still nearly let their biggest upset in years slip away late in the second half.
A couple of 3-pointers by Mason and Danny Hinds, and a tough, inside basket by Chaz Crawford pushed Drexel's lead to 40-28 - its largest of the game. With the pro-Saint Joe crowd cheering the Hawks on, they used a 10-1 run to pull within three.
Matt Stevenson, though, hit a 15-footer from the right side and Kenell Sanchez added a basket on the next possession to make it 45-40 with 5½ minutes left.
Saint Joe's got to 47-46 after a two free throws by Abdulai Jalloh, but Jones immediately fouled Mason, leaving coach Phil Martelli to scream "Why?! Why?!"
Mason calmly sank both from the line and made it 49-46.
With Bruiser Flint berating and badgering the officials, and stomping and scuffing the famed court, the fourth-year Drexel coach pulled off one his biggest regular season victories.
Saint Joe's was a dreadful 5-for-21 from the floor and scored 19 points in the first half for the second time this year (Kansas).
The game was the third in a tripleheader, the Big Five Classic, held at the Palestra. All Division I schools in the Philadelphia area played, with Penn beating La Salle 78-67 in the opener and Temple defeating Villanova 53-52.
