California 80, Fairleigh Dickinson 66
  •

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) Richard Midgley scored a career-high 28 points to lead California past Fairleigh Dickinson 80-66 on Saturday night.

Midgley, who set a new career best for the second time in two weeks, shot 11-for-15 from the floor for the Golden Bears (4-2), including 6-for-9 on 3-pointers.

Rod Benson added 16 points for the Bears, who made a season-best 63 percent of their shots.

Gordon Klaiber hit four 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Knights (1-4), who played without guard Chad Timberlake, their leading scorer.

Timberlake, who started every game last season and the first five this year, was suspended for one game for violating a team rule. Andre Harris had 16 points and nine rebounds while making his first career start in Timberlake's place.

Cal made a 14-5 run in the first half led by 10 points from Midgley, who hit back-to-back 3-pointers. He has 102 3-pointers in his Cal career, passing Lamond Murray for 10th place on the school's career list.

Fairleigh Dickinson kept it close until the Bears opened the second half with five straight points and took a 17-point lead midway through the period.

After dropping the first of four road games on this trip, the Knights will play at Arizona State on Monday.
