CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP) Michael Knight scored 13 points and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County broke a three-game losing steak Saturday night with a 63-61 victory over Towson.
John Zito added 10 points for the Retrievers (2-3), who have won nine straight over the Tigers.
Jonathan Pease led Towson (2-5) with 13 points. Trevan Jackson had 12 and Lawrence Hamm 11 for the Tigers, who have lost four straight.
Towson trailed by 12 with 9:03 left in the second half before Pease hit a 3-pointer from the right side and Tony Dixon followed with a basket for the Tigers' first run of the second half.
UMBC didn't score after Andrew Feeley's inside move produced a 63-56 lead with 3:15 to go. Mike Green's basket and a free throw by Hamm got Towson within 63-59 with 1:51 left.
The Tigers got as close as 63-61 on Trevan Jackson's two free throws with 17.6 seconds remaining. But Hamm's 3-pointer with 3 seconds left missed and Feeley grabbed the rebound as time expired.
Towson connected on 6-of-11 3-pointers in the first half, but the Retrievers closed the half on an 10-2 run to take a 32-29 lead.
Green's 3 put the Tigers up 26-20 with 8:23 remaining in the half, but Towson hit only one more field goal before intermission. Knight had five points during UMBC's burst, closing it out with one-handed floater along the baseline.
UMBC opened the second half by hitting 10 of its first 15 shots from the field, and Brian Hodges' 3-pointer from the left side gave the Retrievers a 57-45 advantage.
