PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Quincy Douby scored 21 points and Ricky Shields added 18 as Rutgers used a big first half for a 72-58 win over Rhode Island Saturday night.
The Scarlet Knights (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak while handing Rhode Island (2-6) its sixth loss in seven games.
After being held to one field goal in the final 13:39 of its game against Princeton Wednesday night, Rutgers reversed that trend in the first half against the Rams.
The Scarlet Knights switching defenses forced Rhode Island into 19.2 percent shooting (5-for-26) in the half.
With the score 7-7, Rutgers went on a 27-4 run to open a 34-11 lead. Shields had nine points and Douby seven during the run.
After Jon Lucky hit a 3-pointer to pull Rhode Island within 15-10, Rutgers scored 19 of the next 20 points as the Rams went 9:55 without a basket.
Scott Hazelton paced Rhode Island with 19 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.
