RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Alexander Harper's 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining stopped a Richmond rally and Virginia Commonwealth held on to beat the Spiders 58-50 Saturday night.
Richmond was 0-for-6 from 3-point range, breaking a string of 232 consecutive games with a 3-pointer dating back to Jan. 27, 1997.
Virginia Commonwealth (3-3) never trailed in the second half, despite hitting just 8 of 28 field goals.
Richmond (3-3) closed to 51-50 with an 11-3 run capped by Courtney Nelson's fast-break layup with 2 minutes remaining before Harper's 3-pointer snapped a 3-for-21 drought for the Rams.
Virginia Commonwealth sealed the victory by hitting 4 of 5 free throws the rest of the way.
The Rams led 34-26 at halftime despite shooting 34 percent. The Spiders had 15 first-half turnovers and finished with 19 for the game.
Nick George led the Rams with 15 points and Harper had 11, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
Jamaal Scott led the Spiders with 13 points. Kevin Steenberge added 11.
