HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Loren Stokes scored 24 points and Hofstra matched its best start to a season since moving to Division I with a 78-68 victory over St. John's on Saturday.
The Pride (6-0), who also won their first six games in 1982-83, began the 1955-56 season with 12 straight wins _ but that was long before Hofstra moved to Div. I in 1973.
Antoine Aguido had 19 points and seven assists for Hofstra despite first-half foul trouble. The freshman guard had 12 points and two big assists in the opening 8 minutes of the second half as the Pride broke a 33-33 tie to take a 57-44 lead.
Aguido capped the run with a four-point play and an assist on a 3 by Aurimas Kieza.
Lamont Hamilton had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Red Storm (3-4), who still lead the series between the Long Island schools 21-3, but Hofstra has won the last two and three of the last five.
Adrian Uter had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Hofstra, which was 29-for-58 from the field.
Daryll Hill had 15 points and eight assists for St. John's and was 3-for-7 from 3-point range while the rest of the team was 3-for-15 from beyond the arc.
This was the first time St. John's played at Hofstra since 1974.
