FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Michael Jefferson scored 21 points Saturday as Longwood picked up its first victory of the season by beating Howard 75-69.
It was the 400th victory in 29 years of basketball for the Lancers (1-11), who are in the second year of a four-year transition from NCAA Division II to Division I.
Longwood overcame 20 turnovers by shooting 50 percent from the field and by outscoring Howard (3-5) 16-7 from the free-throw line. Jefferson was 10-of-11 from the line.
The game was tied nine times, and there were five lead changes.
Cliffone Ault scored 26 points on 11-of-25 shooting for the Bison. Daryl Hudson added 15 points and Louis Ford 10.
Maurice Sumter scored 15 points for the Lancers.
