SEATTLE -- Jamaal Williams is determined to make a big contribution for No. 12 Washington this season.
Williams, a transfer from New Mexico, scored a career-high 22 points in 18 minutes on Wednesday night to lead a school-record eight Huskies in double figures in a 114-53 rout of Sacred Heart.
"I can't guarantee that every night, but I'll try," said the 6-foot-5 junior forward, who was 11-for-12 from the field.
Williams is an inside presence the Huskies didn't have last season on the team that finished second in the Pac-10 and played in the NCAA Tournament.
"It's good for him to have a game like this," coach Lorenzo Romar said.
Williams, who doesn't start, specializes on short jump hooks and dunks.
"That's a lot of points in the paint," he said.
Freshman Joel Smith had 15 points for the Huskies (9-1) and Bobby Jones had 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Tre Simmons and Nate Robinson each scored 13 points, Mike Jensen had 12, Will Conroy 11 and little-used reserve Brandon Burmeister 10 for Washington, which won its fifth straight since losing to No. 13 Gonzaga. Conroy, the Huskies' point guard, tied his career high with 13 assists.
Freshman Luke Granato had 15 points -- all on 3-pointers -- for the Pioneers (1-7), who dropped their sixth straight.
Sacred Heart coach Dave Bike watched his team commit 34 turnovers against Washington's full-court defense.
"They just took us apart with their defense," he said. "That was disturbing."
Jones, a junior starting forward, said Pac-10 teams should beware of Washington's improved defense this season.
"We gave that pressure that a lot of teams can't take," he said. "They had a hard time getting the ball up the court."
Robinson, Washington's high-leaping 5-9 guard, said the Huskies knew they had a lot more talent than the Pioneers.
"We basically had to play against ourselves," he said.
The game was over early after the Huskies got off to a sputtering start and missed their first seven shots.
After Ryon Howard hit a 3-pointer to put Sacred Heart ahead 7-3 with 2:59 gone, the Huskies went on a 24-0 run over the next 5:04 to take a 27-7 lead. The Pioneers never got closer than 16 points after that.
Smith capped Washington's spurt with a fastbreak 5-footer, a 3-pointer and a dunk after a steal. Williams made a fastbreak dunk and a 10-footer in the key in the run. The Huskies led 37-11 after a layup by Jones with 9:24 gone.
The Huskies led 55-31 at halftime.
Kibwe Trim added 11 points for the Pioneers.
In the second half, Washington had another withering run, scoring 21 straight points to go ahead 93-40 with 8:31 left.
It was the first meeting between the schools. Sacred Heart, from Fairfield, Conn., has two players from the Puget Sound area on their roster; Brice Brooks and Joey Henley.
The Huskies did not play junior swingman Brandon Roy, who played 18 minutes for the Huskies in their victory over North Carolina State on Sunday in Seattle. Roy missed the previous five games following arthroscopic knee surgery.
