TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Bryan Hopkins scored 32 points to lead SMU to a 95-83 overtime victory over Tulsa Saturday afternoon.
Tulsa (2-8, 0-2 WAC) couldn't prevail despite a career-high 39 points by 6-foot-8 junior forward Anthony Price. It was more points than any Tulsa player had scored in a game in over 30 years, and the most since Willie Biles scored 43 points on Dec. 28, 1973 against Pan American.
Price eclipsed his career high of 23 points by halftime with 24, and had 36 points in regulation. Price was averaging 15.6 points per game coming into the game.
Price made the second of two free throws to tie the game at 78-78 with 21.4 seconds remaining. SMU couldn't connect on its final possession of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
SMU (6-4, 1-1) scored seven consecutive points in overtime to take control of the game after leading just 82-81 early in overtime.
Two free throws from Eric Castro, who scored a career-high 28 points, a 25-foot three pointer by Hopkins and a two-pointer by Castro with two minutes remaining in overtime gave SMU an 89-81 lead.
A 6-8 senior, Castro's previous career high was 21 points. He had not scored more than 16 points in a game this year.
Tulsa was looking for its first win in three games since Alvin "Pooh" Williamson took over as interim head coach for John Phillips, who resigned on Christmas Day.
The Golden Hurricane led 48-45 at halftime, and overcame a four-point deficit with just under a minute left in regulation.
