STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State has enjoyed plenty of one-sided romps for coach Rick Stansbury, but nothing like this.
Lawrence Roberts had 19 points and 15 rebounds, and the 18th-ranked Bulldogs routed Auburn 90-53 on Wednesday night in their most lopsided Southeastern Conference victory in Stansbury's seven seasons.
The 37-point margin of victory surpassed the previous best, which was also set at Auburn's expense in February 2002 when Mississippi State routed the Tigers 89-53.
This one came in the teams' SEC opener, and it gave notice that the league's reigning regular-season champions are thinking about a repeat.
"Our depth, our ability to get easy baskets -- particularly in the second half -- just took a toll on them, and we just wore them down," Stansbury said.
Winsome Frazier and Jamall Edmonson each had 12 points for the Bulldogs (13-2), who shot 50 percent from the field to win their eighth straight over Auburn (9-5) and seventh straight victory this season.
It was a predictably punishing performance on the glass for Mississippi State, which had as many rebounds as Auburn had points and outrebounded the Tigers 53-33.
"We did what we were supposed to do tonight on those backboards -- we are supposed to outrebound them," Stansbury said.
Mississippi State's starting front line -- 6-foot-9 Roberts and 7-2 Wesley Morgan, who replaced 7-foot Marcus Campbell in the lineup -- overpowered Auburn, which started four guards and a forward with no starter taller than 6-6.
Smaller lineups "tend to come out and play hard. You've just got to make sure you don't get into a shoving battle with them," Roberts said. "But the taller guys are going to prevail every time."
Mississippi State used a 21-6 run early in the second half to break the game open. Frazier had two 3-pointers and Ontario Harper had six points during the spurt, which gave the Bulldogs a 58-33 lead with 12:12 remaining.
It was the third straight game Roberts had double figures in points and rebounds, and the reigning SEC player of the year was one rebound shy of that by halftime.
"A lot of times, he posted up and I couldn't even see our guy behind him," first-year Auburn coach Jeff Lebo said. "It was like five-on-four out there."
Toney Douglas, the SEC's leading scorer, had 14 points -- five fewer than his average, and Ian Young added 10 for Auburn.
"The only chance we had in this game was to make shots," Lebo said. "I felt decent at (halftime), and in the second half, it just snowballed on us and we couldn't find a way to stop them."
The guard-heavy Tigers were just 3-of-18 from beyond the arc in the first half, were held to 25 percent shooting from the field in the half and shot 26 percent for the game.
Auburn took its only lead when a 3-pointer by Douglas made it 21-20 with 8:19 left in the first half.
Mississippi State scored six quick points in the following minute as part of a 17-4 spurt to close the half. Ervin's 3-pointer at the buzzer capped the run and made it 37-25.
Auburn hasn't beaten Mississippi State since a 60-56 victory in January 2001.
Afterward, Stansbury said he suspended Campbell for the game for an unspecified violation of team conduct rules. The coach said Campbell's violation wasn't serious, and he is expected back for Saturday's game at Mississippi.
