CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Rob Gogerty scored a season-high 17 points and Maryland-Baltimore County halted a nine-game conference losing streak with a 74-67 victory over Stony Brook on Wednesday night.
The Retrievers (6-6, 1-2 America East), who trailed by 13 with 12:21 left in regulation, got back into it with a stingy full-court press and an 18-2 run capped by Mike Housman's backdoor layup and a steal and layup by Rashad Bilal.
Stony Brook (5-7, 0-3) tied it at 57 on a pair of free throws by Bobby Santiago, but Bilal scored on a left-side drive with 3:27 left, putting the Retrievers ahead for good.
UMBC, which has won four of five, held the Seawolves to three field goals over the final 13:17. Stony Brook, which has dropped two straight and four of five, finished 18-for-44 from the field.
Brian Hodges scored 12 points for the Retrievers, who hadn't won a conference game since defeating Stony Brook at home on Feb. 8, 2004. Housman and Bilal added 10 apiece.
Antwan Hardy led Stony Brook with 16 points, and Bobby Santiago added 15.
Mike Orfini had a season-high 11 points in the first half for the Seawolves, who ended the half on a 17-7 run for a 34-31 lead at intermission. But Orfini didn't attempt a field goal in the second half.
Andrew Feeley scored on a jump-hook and a short jumper to give UMBC a 24-17 lead with 9:19 left in the first half, but Stoney Brook reeled off 12 unanswered points, the final six coming on consecutive 3-pointers by Orfini and Hardy.
Hodges' 3 and John Zito's bank shot helped UMBC tie it at 31, but Orfini buried a 3 from deep in the left corner 33.8 seconds before halftime.
