TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Marques Lewis hit a tiebreaking free throw with three seconds to play as UAB beat South Florida 62-61 on Saturday.
Lewis was fouled on an in-close shot with the score tied at 61. After missing his first attempt, Lewis converted the second free throw to give UAB its margin of victory.
South Florida's Terrence Leather missed a desperation three-point shot at the buzzer.
Ronell Taylor scored 17 points for UAB (12-3, 2-0). The Blazers have won six consecutive games, including two straight Conference USA games.
South Florida (8-5, 1-1) got 16 points from both Leather and Brian Swift. The Bulls were looking to win back-to-back conference games for the first time since February 2003.
After trailing by 11 at halftime, South Florida got within 60-57 on James Holmes' three-pointer with four minutes remaining. Holmes then tied it at 60 with another three-pointer with 1:37 left.
UAB's Donell Taylor made a sliding steal of an errant pass with 1:09 to go. He was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit one of two free throws to give UAB a 61-60 lead with 49 seconds left.
South Florida's Collin Dennis knotted it at 61-61 on a free throw with was 10.5 seconds remaining.
Marvett McDonald hit a pair of three-pointers during an 18-6 run over the final five minutes of the first half that put UAB ahead 42-31 at intermission.
