LEWISTON, N.Y. (AP) -- David Brooks scored 15 points and Juan Mendez and Alvin Cruz each chipped in 14 to help lift Niagara to a 73-71 win over Iona Saturday.
Lorenzo Miles and James Mathis each contributed 10 points for the Purple Eagles (9-4, 4-1 MAAC). Niagara extended its home winning streak to 10 games dating back to last year.
Iona (4-9, 0-4) trailed 72-69 when Charles Henson's runner trimmed the lead to one with 53.3 seconds remaining. After Mathis hit one of two free-throws, the Gaels had a chance to tie, but Steve Burtt's jumper from the top of the key fell in after the buzzer.
Mendez, who came into the game as the second-leading scorer in the country by averaging 25.3 points, fell short of eclipsing the all-time NCAA Division I scoring record for a Canadian. Mendez now has 1,823 points in his career, four behind the mark set by Canisius's Michael Meeks, who played in the mid-1990s.
Mendez also added 10 rebounds before fouling out with 3:04 to go.
Henson and Ricky Soliver each had 14 points to lead Iona, which lost for the eighth time in the past ten games.
