BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) -- Taylor Coppenrath and T.J. Sorrentine each scored 25 points to put Vermont over Maine 67-66 Saturday.
Coppenrath, the nation's leading scorer heading into the game, made just 8-of-18 from the floor, but went 9-for-10 from the line and had eight rebounds for Vermont (8-3, 4-0 America East).
Ernest Turner paced Maine (7-6, 2-2) with a game-high 28 points.
The Black Bears took a 48-37 lead with 9:37 to go, battling back from Vermont's 30-26 halftime lead. The Catamounts responded with a 23-6 tear. Sorrentine and Josh Duell each had 3s, and the Catamounts shot 8-for-10 from the line.
But a second Maine rally put the Catamounts behind 66-64 as Sorrentine went to the line and added a point with 17 seconds left. Vermont regained possession and Duell's pass found Coppenrath, who bucketed the game-winner with 6.1 seconds left.
Turner's long 3-point attempt for Maine fell short, sealing the win.
"It was a war every step of the way today and we were the last one standing," said Vermont coach Tom Brennan. "We have two great players and they came through when we needed them. Maine is a good team, very well coached, but we were a little luckier."
Sorrentine hit 5-of-11 3s, and added another eight rebounds for Vermont, winners of five straight.
Maine hit 11-of-22 3s, including 6 of 10 in the second half. Kevin Reed had 13 points for Maine, including 10 in the second half. Jermaine Jackson had 10 for the Black Bears.
