CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Ronny Dawn hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to lead Marshall to a 59-55 victory over West Virginia on Tuesday night.

In relying heavily on the outside shot, Marshall (3-10) broke a four-game losing streak overall and beat its cross-state rival for just the third time in the last 10 meetings.

West Virginia (11-2) has dropped two of three games after starting the season 10-0. The Mountaineers failed in their bid to go 11-0 in nonconference games for the second time in school history.

Dawn, who came into the game after Joe Miles came up limping, hit a pair of NBA-range 3-pointers in a 39-second span for a 51-48 lead with three minutes left.

The teams traded free throws before West Virginia's Tyrone Sally tipped in his own miss to tie it at 52-52 with 51 seconds left.

Dawn then hit a long jumper from the top of the key and Enoch Bunch added two free throws with 23 seconds left.

Marshall's 13 3-pointers made were its most this season and the most allowed by West Virginia.

A.W. Hamilton led Marshall with 17 points and Dawn had 15.

D'or Fischer led West Virginia with 20 points and Tyrone Sally added 13.

It was the seventh straight game in the series decided by six points or less, including two overtimes.
