Stoudamire lights up Oregon as No. 13 Arizona rolls
  •

EUGENE, Ore. -- For the third consecutive game, Salim Stoudamire's sweet shooting stroke carried No. 13 Arizona.

The senior guard scored 27 points to lead the Wildcats to a 74-66 victory against Oregon on Thursday night.

Stoudamire was almost perfect in the first half, scoring 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting. He made all three of his 3-point attempts and was 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Stoudamire has scored 80 points in Arizona's last three games -- all victories.

"Salim did a good job," Arizona coach Lute Olson said. "He was much more active tonight. It's not easy when someone's draped on you the whole time, but he maintained and stayed composed."

Channing Frye had 17 points and Hassan Adams added 13 points, six assists and six rebounds for the Wildcats (15-3, 5-1 Pac-10), who beat the Ducks (11-4, 3-3) for the fifth consecutive time.

Bryce Taylor led Oregon with 20 points, while Aaron Brooks added 15 points and six assists.

Taylor, a freshman, also had the arduous task of defending Stoudamire.

"He's very challenging to guard because he runs so hard all the time," Taylor said. "All he needs is, like, point-five seconds, and he's got the shot off."

Stoudamire's quick trigger ignited a game-turning 16-0 run when he made a pair of 3-pointers midway through the first half to give the Wildcats a 23-20 lead.

He scored four more points on free throws during that run, while Adams scored the other six points. The result was a 33-20 lead at the 6:28 mark. Arizona led 42-29 at the break.

Stoudamire's fifth 3-pointer of the game put the Wildcats up 54-39, their largest lead of the game.

The Ducks, led by Brooks, answered with a 15-2 run to pull within 56-54 with 8:27 left. Brooks scored the first seven points of the run and assisted on a two other field goals.

Mustafa Shakur gave the Wildcats some cushion with a jumper, followed by a 3-pointer for a 62-56 lead. They were Shakur's only points of the game.

"I know I can hit those shots," Shakur said. "I just try to be patient and let it come to me through the system."

After Ray Schafer made a pair of free throws for Oregon to cut the lead to 64-61, Arizona finished on a 10-5 run to close out the game.

"We had a tremendous second half against a very good basketball team," Oregon coach Ernie Kent said. "(But) we never really gave ourselves a chance to truly get back in the game."

The Ducks played the Wildcats close to even on the stat sheet, shooting 45 percent to Arizona's 42 and outrebounding Arizona 38-34.

"They played real hard until the end," Stoudamire said. "We got a lead, but they fought back and showed some grit."

Just not enough.

"This shows a lot of composure, that we were able to hold them off and get this win on the road," Frye said. "If we buckled under pressure, we wouldn't be where we are right now."
