Duke at Florida State

Redick's season-high 31 powers No. 4 Duke over Florida State
  •

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- J.J. Redick nailed his fifth 3-pointer of the first half as the buzzer sounded, then gave Florida State's heckling student section a wave good bye.

"That's between me and them," Redick said. "At times I want to go up and confront some people with the stuff they say. It's part of college basketball I guess."

Redick scored a season-high 31 points and No. 4 Duke remained unbeaten with an 88-56 victory over the Seminoles on Saturday.

The Blue Devils (15-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) were never in trouble, jumping to an 18-8 lead and steadily building it to as many as 34 late in the game.

Redick scored 19 in the first half as the Blue Devils took a 44-26 lead.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said Redick, who lost 20 pounds in the offseason for conditioning purposes, responds well to the razzing he gets away from home.

"Good players like that," said Krzyzewski, who described Redick as the best shooter he's coached. "And he's really a good player, so he really likes that."

The 6-foot-4 Redick was 9-of-18 from the floor, including 8-of-11 from 3-point distance and perfect in five tries at the line.

"He's the most phenomenal shooter I've ever seen," Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. "It's almost automatic."

Redick said he was gaining confidence as the game went on.

"The last 10 minutes of the first half I got into a rhythm and when I get in a rhythm, it feels like anything can go in," Redick said. "I look to score. That's my role."

Florida State's Andrew Wilson was given the assignment of guarding Redick.

"I couldn't stop him," Wilson conceded.

"He was pretty much unstoppable," Wilson said. "You've got to try to not let it deflate you."

Florida State (10-9, 2-4) started cold, hitting just four of its first 20 field-goal tries as Duke bolted to a 31-14 lead.

Isiah Swann came off the bench to lead Florida State with 13 points and Von Wafer added 10, eight in the second half.

Wafer, Al Thornton and Todd Galloway, who combined for 77 points in Tuesday's upset victory over Wake Forest, totaled just five in the first half on 2-for-12 shooting.

A crowd of 12,111 showed up to see if the Seminoles might do it again -- it was their biggest audience since Duke visited Jan. 21, 1995 -- but instead witnessed the team's second-worst ACC home loss since joining the league in the 1991-92 season.

Daniel Ewing added 14 points, and Shelden Williams contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds to help Duke to a 37-28 advantage on the boards. Shavlik Randolph was 5-for-5 from the field and finished with 10 points.

Williams scored Duke's first six points of the second half to push its lead to 50-28

Duke shot 55.4 percent for the game to Florida State's 33.3 percent.

Redick, however, did most of the damage.

"He made some big 3s from far out and that's demoralizing to a team that's trying to come back," Krzyzewski said.

Not to mention Florida State's student section.
