EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Kelly Whitney scored 19 points and Seton Hall snapped a four-game losing streak by beating intrastate rival Rutgers 74-58 on Saturday in a game marred by the ejection of Scarlet Knights forward Marquis Webb for a second-half flagrant foul.
Webb almost caused an on-court scuffle after elbowing Andre Sweet near midcourt after the Seton Hall forward scored on a rebound follow to give the Pirates (9-7, 1-4) a 55-47 lead with 11:36 to go.
Replays showed that Sweet had shoved Webb after the basket, Webb retaliated near midcourt, knocking Sweet to the floor with a shoulder and elbow.
A livid Sweet tried to get at Webb, but he was held back by teammates.
After reviewing a replay of the incident, officials tossed Webb out of the game and spoke with players from both teams.
Sweet hit a free throw after play resumed and Seton Hall added the next five points to open a 61-47 lead.
Rutgers (7-8, 1-4) never got closer than eight points the rest of the way in losing for the 32nd time in 35 conference road games over the last four-plus seasons.
J.R. Morris had 12 of his 15 points in the second half in leaving Providence (9-8, 0-4) as the only Big East team without a win in the conference this year. The Friars were idle Saturday.
Jamar Nutter scored all 11 of his career high points for Seton Hall in the first half.
Ricky Shields had 17 points and Quincy Douby 16 for Rutgers, which has lost five in a row and six of seven to Seton Hall.
Nutter, who had never scored more than seven points in 13 collegiate games, hit 4-of-5 shots in the half, including his first three from 3-point range, in helping Seton Hall take a 34-30 halftime lead.
The Pirates opened the second half with a 12-4 run to take a 46-34 lead. Whitney had six points, freshman Justin Cerasoli ignited the spurt with a three-point play and Morris closed it with a 3-point basket.
