MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Kevin Spicer hit a layup with 3 seconds remaining to lift Alabama State to a 52-51 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory over Southern University on Saturday.
The teams were tied 49-49 after the Hornets went on a 9-1 spurt over 3 minutes. Deon Saunders scored inside to put Southern back in front until Ralfeal Golden's free throw cut it to 1 with 1:10 remaining.
Alexander Oliver led the Hornets (7-8, 4-2) with 15 points, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Spicer finished with 14 points and seven rebounds and Ralfeal Golden added 11 points.
Chris Alexander scored 13 points for the Jaguars (8-8, 5-2) and Jarvis Vaughn added 10.
Peter Cipriano grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Jaguars, who dominated the boards 34-25.
Alabama State shot only 28 percent in the first half and trailed 27-23 at halftime. Southern opened the second half 12-7 run and led by as many as 13 points in the period.
