VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Ron Howard made seven of his school-record 18 free throws in overtime to lead Valparaiso to an 81-75 victory over Centenary in the Mid-Continent Conference on Saturday night.
The teams were tied 69-69 at the end of regulation and Howard, fouled on a 3-point attempt, made each of the free throws to give the host Crusaders (11-11, 7-3) the lead for good, 72-69.
Howard made four more free throws in OT, the last one with 14 seconds left that gave Valparaiso an eight-point cushion, 81-73.
Howard, who missed only two free-throw attempts on the evening, broke the old record of 16 made in a game set by Chris Ensminger against Troy State in the 1994-95 season. Howard also had five assists and four steals for the game.
Dan Oppland led Valparaiso with 23 points, hitting 9-of-14 from the field to go with his six rebounds. The only other Crusader scoring in double digits was Kenny Harris with 12.
The lead changed 17 times and the score was tied eight times in the match-up.
The Gents (2-19, 0-10) had four players scoring in double digits. Chad Maclies led the team with 20 points and five boards, Jarmorrow Moragne put up 16 points, Tyrone Hamilton had 13 points and six assists, and Curtis Tillman added 12 points.
