CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- DeAngelo Newsom scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds, leading Southern Utah to a 70-63 win over Centenary Saturday.
Rand Janes scored 16 points, and Tim Gainey added 13 for the Thunderbirds (12-12, 5-8 Mid-Continent).
Chad Maclies led Centenary (3-19, 1-11) with 21 points.
Maclies' layup with 5:07 remaining got the Gents within a basket at 63-61, but Centenary managed only one more field goal the rest of the way.
Newsom's tip-in off the offensive board gave the Thunderbirds the winning margin with 3:14 left. Nate Janes hit two free throws and Newsom made another layup in the final two minutes to put the game out of reach.
Leading 31-26 at halftime, Southern Utah seemed on the verge of breaking the game open three times in the second half, but Centenary answered each time.
Maclies stopped one Thunderbird run with a jump hook in the key, and Kevin Taylor countered two others with 3-pointers.
Southern Utah shot 50 percent from the field, including 58 percent in the second half.
