ELON, N.C. (AP) -- Freshman Trey Hopkins hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:15 left Saturday to lift Western Carolina past Elon 54-49.
Antonio Russell and Corey Muirhead each scored 11 points to lead the Catamounts (8-17, 3-9 Southern Conference), while David Berghoefer added 10.
Le'Vonn Jordan scored 15 points for the Phoenix (5-20, 3-9), who had won three straight games.
The teams were tied at 49 when Hopkins hit a 3 _ only his second field goal of the game _ to put Western Carolina ahead to stay. He added a free throw with 16 seconds left to help the Catamounts seal the win.
Western Carolina held Elon to 6-for-28 shooting in the first half, taking a 26-16 lead at the break. The Phoenix rallied, taking a 37-36 lead on a 3-pointer from Scottie Rice midway through the second half.
The Phoenix later used seven straight points to take a 49-42 lead with 3:29 to play, but did not score again.
