LSU at Mississippi State

LSU 80, Mississippi State 72
  •

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Brandon Bass had 21 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to lead LSU past Mississippi State 80-72 Wednesday night, snapping the Bulldogs' 12-game home winning streak.

LSU (14-8, 7-4) won just its second road game this season and moved into second place in the SEC West behind Alabama.

Freshman Glen Davis added 19 points, and Antonio Hudson and Tack Minor added 11 points apiece for the Tigers, who swept Mississippi State for the first time since 1993.

Mississippi State pulled to 70-65 when Ontario Harper's basket capped a 12-3 run with 3:18 to play. But star forward Lawrence Roberts fouled out 17 seconds later, allowing the Tigers to pull away in the final minutes.

Shane Power had 20 points, and Roberts had 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (18-7, 6-5), who fell into third place in the division.

Winsome Frazier, who missed more than five weeks with a broken left foot, came off the bench and finished with 11 points in his first game back.

Harper also had 11 points for the Bulldogs.

LSU broke a 41-all tie with a 19-3 spurt in the second half. The Tigers held Mississippi State without a field goal for nearly eight minutes and led by 16 midway through the half.

The Bulldogs entered as one of the best home teams in the SEC, having won all 10 of their previous home games this season.

Conversely, LSU was one of the league's worst teams away from home with a 1-7 record outside of Baton Rouge, with its lone road win coming at struggling Georgia.

But the combination of Bass and Davis _ a 6-foot-9, 310-pound freshman nicknamed "Baby Shaq" _ was too much for Mississippi State to contain _ even on its home floor, where the Bulldogs had been unbeatable during the past 12 months.

The Bulldogs' last loss at Humphrey Coliseum came nearly one year ago, a four-point loss to Alabama on Feb. 21, 2004. They lost 69-62 to LSU in Baton Rouge last month.
