BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Chris Alexander scored 13 points as Southern University held off Alabama State to win 56-55 on Saturday night.
Alexander hit 4-of-11 shots from the floor and 2-of-5 3-pointers while also contributing five assists.
Neither team could score in the final minute. The scored was tied eight times and the lead changed six times during the game.
Southern (12-11, 9-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) shot 35.5 percent from the floor in the first half, 52.6 percent in the second half and 42 percent for the game.
The game was tied at 30 at halftime.
Alexander Oliver led Alabama State (11-11, 9-4) with 14 points and had five assists. Kevin Spicer added 10 points.
In the first half, Alabama State shot 48 percent from the floor and it shot 34.8 percent in the second. For the game, it shot 41.7 percent.
Alabama State outscored Southern 26-20 in the paint and got 19 points off turnovers to Southern's 17.
