CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Freshman guard Brian Waters scored 14 points as Elon held off several second half rallies to beat The Citadel 65-58 on Saturday.
The Phoenix (6-21, 4-10 Southern Conference) never trailed in the final 20 minutes, hitting three of four free throws in the final 22 seconds to seal the win.
Waters' 3-points with just over a minute left in the first half gave Elon the lead for good.
The Bulldogs (12-13, 4-10) trailed 28-25 at the break, and cut the Phoenix lead to three points or less six times in the second half, but could never tie or take the lead.
Kevin Hammack's 3-pointer with 2:14 to go cut Elon's lead to 59-56, but Scottie Rice knocked down two free throws on the next possession and the Bulldogs wouldn't get any closer.
Hammack led The Citadel with 21 points and scored the Bulldogs first 13 points of the game. Warren McLendon added 12 points.
Chris Chalko and Colin Wyatt each had 13 points for the Phoenix.
