PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Maurice Maxwell scored 17 points and Jeff Viggiano made five crucial free throws in overtime as Massachusetts edged La Salle 69-66 on Saturday.
Rashaun Freeman added 17 points, and Viggiano and Art Bowers 10 each for the Minutemen (14-9, 7-5 Atlantic 10), now assured of their first winning record since 1999-2000.
Darnell Harris and Jermaine Hamas each had 18 points for La Salle (8-16, 4-9), while Steven Smith, the A-10's leading scorer at 21 points per game, was held to 12 points, hitting on only 2-of-11 from the field.
La Salle took a 55-49 lead on a 3-point shot by Thomas with 5:30 left to play, but UMass ran off nine straight points, six by Freeman, to tie the score at 58-58. Another 3-point shot by Thomas with 59 seconds to go sent the game into overtime.
