RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Michael Doles' free throw with 5.1 seconds remaining in overtime Saturday lifted Virginia Commonwealth's Rams to a 72-71 win over North Carolina-Wilmington's Seahawks.
The Seahawks led 66-56 with 1:14 remaining in regulation. B.A. Walker's 3-pointer took the margin to seven with 1:04 remaining. After Halston Lane missed two free-throws, Jesse Pellot-Rosa's layup with 36 seconds left cut the margin to 66-61. Following a Seahawks turnover, Doles hit a foul-line jumper with 29.3 seconds remaining. Doles followed another Seahawks turnover with a 3-pointer with 25.5 seconds remaining to tie it at 66. John Goldsberry missed a field goal with 1.1 seconds remaining that would have pulled the game out for the Seahawks.
With the win, VCU (13-5, 17-11) earned second place in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks (13-5 18-9) will be seeded third in the CAA tournament next weekend.
Lane scored all of the Seahawks' points in overtime, tying the game at 71 on a 3-pointer with 35.6 seconds remaining. Following Doles' free throw, T.J. Carter had a turnover when Pellot-Rosa stole the ball at the buzzer.
Doles led the Rams with 22 points. Walker added 14, and Pella-Rosa 13.
Lane led the Seahawks with 20. Goldsberry added 15, and Aaron Coombs 13.
