HANOVER, N.H. (AP) -- Steve Callahan's lay-in just before the buzzer helped Dartmouth defeat Yale 53-52 Saturday night.
Yale (9-15, 5-6) had rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit and forged its first second-half lead with 21 seconds remaining. Edwin Draughan hit the first of two free throws to put the Bulldogs up, 52-51, but missed the second.
After a Dartmouth miss with nine seconds left, the Big Green got the ball back after a Bulldogs turnover and set up the game-winning play. Mike Liddy inbounded the ball on the baseline near the Dartmouth bench and found Callahan, who drove and scooped up a shot that bounced off the rim and in.
With the teams tied 5:27 into the game, Yale embarked on an 8-1 run to reach its largest lead, 16-9. Caleb Holmes capped the run with a jumper at 10:10, but that was Yale's final basket until 17 seconds remained in the half.
Dartmouth (10-15, 7-5 Ivy) responded with an 18-0 run, fueled by six points from Liddy and three 3-pointers from Mike McLaren. The Big Green led 33-19 at halftime.
David Gardner was the high scorer for Dartmouth with 12 points while Liddy contributed five assists. Draughan finished with 10 points for Yale while Dominick Martin turned in a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
