AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Rick McFadden and Romeo Travis scored 15 points apiece to lead Akron to a 71-64 victory over Marshall on Wednesday.
McFadden connected on 5-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Travis had eight rebounds for the Zips (18-8, 11-6 Mid-American Conference), who have won five of their last six games.
David Anderson had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Marshall (5-21, 2-15), and Mark Patton added 12 points and 16 boards. The Thundering Herd have lost five straight.
The Zips opened the game with a 10-2 run and led 36-32 at halftime. The Thundering Herd committed 10 turnovers in the first half.
Marshall's A.W. Hamilton made two free throws to tie the game at 36 with 18:35 remaining but Akron responded with a 9-2 spurt. Nick Meyers hit a 3-pointer, Darryl Peterson made a jumper and Travis got inside for a layup during the run.
The Thundering Herd battled back again, pulling within 45-42 on a layup by LaVar Carter with 10:40 left. McFadden then connected on a 3 as the Zips scored 10 of the next 12 points.
Hamilton also had 10 points for Marshall, who outrebounded Akron 37-25.
