ST. LOUIS -- Randy Burns scored 14 points and hit three key 3-pointers while Wichita State was pulling away for a 72-52 victory over Drake in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday night.
Kyle Wilson and Rob Kampman added 11 points apiece for the Shockers (20-8), who had entered the game as a slumping No. 2 seed having lost five of the previous six games. Wichita State beat Drake (13-16), the seventh seed, for the third time this season and ended the Bulldogs' five-game winning streak.
Drake was held to 26-percent shooting after shooting 52 percent in the first round. The winning streak was the school's longest since a seven-game run in 1987-88.
The first two 3-pointers from Burns were a minute apart and gave Wichita State a 53-40 lead with 8:27 to go. The baskets ended a rally from Drake, which had missed three shots from close range with a chance to cut the gap to five points.
Burns, who was 4-for-6 from 3-point range, added another from long range to give Wichita State its largest lead at 58-42 with six minutes to go.
Pete Eggers had 14 points and Klayton Korver 12 for Drake. Aliou Keita had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Drake's Lonnie Randolph, who had 20 points in a first-round victory over Evansville, dislocated a finger on his left hand midway through the first half and was scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting. Randolph missed the last 9:25 of the half while having the injury treated.
Wichita State answered another Drake challenge at the end of the first half with an 11-2 run for a 37-29 lead, right after the Bulldogs had taken their first lead. The Shockers shot 57 percent in the half and were 6-for-11 from 3-point range.
