VESTAL, N.Y. -- Taylor Coppenrath scored 33 points to lead top-seeded Vermont to a 76-61 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County in the quarterfinals of the America East Conference Basketball Championship on Saturday.
The Catamounts (22-6), two-time defending champions, face Binghamton in the semifinals Sunday at noon.
It was the eighth time this season that Coppenrath, three-time player of the year and defending conference-scoring champion at 24.8 points per game, scored 30 or more points.
The 6-foot-9 senior forward also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Senior guard T.J. Sorrentine added 20 points and hit six 3-pointers for the Catamounts.
Freshman guard Brian Hodges led UMBC (11-18) with 14 points. Chris Pugh added 11.
Vermont had a 41-33 halftime lead. The Catamounts led by as many as 24, going up 67-43 when Coppenrath made a layup with 10:18 remaining.
Vermont shot 10-for-23 from 3-point range and forced 15 Retrievers' turnovers.
