VESTAL, N.Y. -- Jose Juan Barea scored 41 points Saturday night to lead Northeastern to a 90-79 victory over Stony Brook in the quarterfinals of the America East Conference Tournament.
The loss ended the season for Stony Brook (12-17) and head coach Nick Marcarchuk, who is retiring after six years with the Seawolves and 28 seasons overall in Division I.
Barea's 41 points were the second-most in the tournament's 24-year history, behind only the 43 scored by Vermont's Taylor Coppenrath in last season's championship game.
Barea, a first-team all-conference selection who was second to Coppenrath in the league in scoring this season, was dazzling. The speedy point guard broke down Stony Brook's zone defense with ease, getting to the basket for layup after layup. The 41 points were his collegiate best, and he tied the conference tournament record by hitting 17 field goals.
Marcus Barnes scored 16 points for Northeastern.
Mike Popko had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Cori Spencer had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Stony Brook.
