Florida bounces back with big win over Vanderbilt
  •

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Al Horford blamed himself for Florida's last loss.

The senior center scored six points and played poor defense earlier in the week at South Carolina. He didn't want to feel like that again.

Horford had 16 points, 16 rebounds and six assists, and the fifth-ranked Gators bounced back from consecutive losses to defeat Vanderbilt 81-58 on Saturday.

Florida (18-2, 4-2 Southeastern Conference) matched the school record with its 19th straight victory at home and avoided its first three-game losing streak in nearly two years. The Gators also extended their winning streak against the Commodores (12-5, 3-3) to five games.

Horford, the son of former NBA center Tito Horford, keyed the latest victory.

"I felt it was time for us to step up and time for me to step up," Horford said. "We've got to be able to dominate inside and on the glass."

Horford did. He was 6-of-12 from the field, had seven offensive rebounds and scored three baskets in a 15-4 run early in the second half that helped Florida turn a halftime deficit into a double-digit lead.

He hit a short jumper that trimmed Vandy's lead to 42-41, converted a three-point play that put the Gators ahead for the first time since early in the game and had a putback that capped the spurt and made it 54-46.

"It's good to see him do well because he was nonexistent at South Carolina," Florida coach Billy Donovan said, referring to Wednesday's 68-62 loss.

The Gators cruised the rest of the way, beating the Commodores for the 10th time in 11 games.

DeMarre Carroll led Vanderbilt with 18 points, 15 in the first half. The Commodores, who have lost three of four since a stunning win at Kentucky, shot 60 percent in the first half and led by as many as 10 points.

But they had just seven field goals in the second half - two on goaltending calls - and shot 29 percent. The conference's leading free-throw shooting team also missed six foul shots in the second half.

Leading scorer Shan Foster had 11 points, his lowest total in 10 games.

"It was a tale of two halves," Vandy coach Kevin Stallings said. "We had a chance to grab control of the game and we didn't finish the first half well. We kind of let them off the hook a little bit. They came out and dominated the second half. They overpowered us inside."

Although the Gators trailed 38-35 at halftime, they were much more effective after the break. They seemingly wore down the Commodores with the press, started driving to the basket and shot 62 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Lee Humphrey broke out of a shooting slump and scored 14 points, while Taurean Green added 12 and Joakim Noah had 10.

Corey Brewer, second on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists, came off the bench for the first time in his career and snapped his consecutive-start streak at 51 games. Slowed by a sprained right ankle, Brewer had three points, three turnovers and four fouls.

Donovan said Brewer asked to come off the bench because he felt freshman Walter Hodge would help the Gators more. Hodge finished with nine points.

"Everybody stepped up," Noah said. "We weren't going to lose three in a row, especially not at home."

Florida last won 19 in a row at the O'Connell Center spanning the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. The Gators entered the day with the fifth-longest current home winning streak in the nation, behind Southern Illinois, Gonzaga, Illinois and New Mexico.

"When teams come to the O'Dome, they know it's going to be tough," Humphrey said. "It's a tough environment, and we showed that in the second half."
