Tenth-ranked Tigers bounce back behind Temple, Mitchell
  •

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU bounced back from its first loss with an easy win.

Garrett Temple had 17 points and Tasmin Mitchell scored 14 of his 16 in the second half, leading the 10th-ranked Tigers to a 91-57 victory over McNeese State on Wednesday night.

Five players scored in double figures for LSU, which struggled on offense in losing to Wichita State last weekend.

"We let the game last Saturday become too much of a half-court game," LSU coach John Brady said. "We wanted to speed the game up. We wanted to pick up the tempo and get some easy baskets. We did that tonight."

Glen Davis made only three field goals but hit nine free throws to finish with 15 points. Reserve guard Ben Voogd scored a career-high 12 points, and Darnell Lazare added 11.

Temple shot 7-of-12 from the field and hit three 3-pointers for the Tigers (3-1). Against the Shockers, he scored just three points.

"The other day I rushed my shots," Temple said. "I made a point tonight to just let the game come to me. The last game I was pressing knowing the team needed me to make some shots."

Mitchell's game improved, too.

"I rushed some shots in the first half," said Mitchell, who had only six points against Wichita State. "I went to the goal at the start of the second half and got more comfortable."

Aldryan Wardell paced McNeese State (2-5) with a season-high 16 points. John Ford, who made three 3-pointers in the first half, had 13.

Jarvis Bradley, the Cowboys' leading scorer, was held to six points -- eight below his season average.

"LSU's big and strong," McNeese State coach Dave Simmons said. "Anytime we had a roll going, they would come down and hit a couple of 3s that broke our back. That's a really good, balanced team. It showed up tonight."

The Tigers used a couple of scoring flurries in the first 10 minutes to take control.

LSU ran off eight consecutive points to take a 10-2 lead four minutes into the first half. A couple of minutes later, the Tigers scored 12 points in a row to go ahead 23-6. Alex Farrer and Temple made 3-pointers during that stretch.

LSU led 38-22 at halftime and made sure the Cowboys didn't stage a comeback by opening the second half with a 16-6 run in the first five minutes. During that span, Davis converted a three-point play and made a pair of free throws as the Tigers built a 54-28 lead.

McNeese State could get no closer than 24 points the rest of the way.
