SAN DIEGO -- Going coast-to-coast took on new meaning for No. 22 Oklahoma State.
Mario Boggan scored 24 points and the Cowboys used a 16-0 run to remain undefeated, beating Ball State 75-56 Saturday in the opening game of the San Diego Slam.
Oklahoma State won on both coasts in a span of five days. The Cowboys beat No. 21 Syracuse 72-68 in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
When they got to San Diego, they prevailed in a matchup of first-year coaches with famous fathers.
The Cowboys (11-0) kept Sean Sutton's record as a head coach perfect. He was promoted after his father, Eddie, retired in May.
On the other bench was Ronny Thompson, son of former Georgetown coach John Thompson. He was hired by the Cardinals in April.
The small crowd and a lot of travel might have contributed to the Cowboys letting the Cardinals stay close for the first 16 minutes.
"We didn't take Ball State lightly," Sutton said. "We didn't have any zip. We were tired maybe from the travel. I thought early on we were sluggish, but give them credit. They were making their shots."
For a little bit, anyway.
When Ball State (3-6) went cold from the field, the Cowboys took advantage and blew the game open.
Leading 27-23, Oklahoma State scored the last eight points of the first half and the first eight of the second to open a 20-point lead.
Terrel Harris hit a 3-pointer a minute into the second half, then stole the ball and scored on a fastbreak layup. Boggan hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired for a 43-23 lead with 17:29 left.
"I thought the end of the first half hurt us," Thompson said. "We went cold and made some poor decisions, and that second half we started off erratic."
Boggan wasn't getting shots early on.
During a timeout early in the first half, "I introduced the players back to Mario," Sutton said. "And after that we defended better and got better shots at the other end."
JamesOn Curry scored 13 points for Oklahoma State while Harris and David Monds had 10 apiece.
"Boggan can go inside and outside, and with Curry they both demand so much attention," Thompson said.
"We have enough offense, and when our defense plays hard, we can be a good team," Boggan said.
Ball State went without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes. After Peyton Stovall hit a 3-pointer with 4:16 left in the first half, the Cardinals didn't hit another shot from the field until Skip Mills made a layup with 14:36 left to play that pulled the Cardinals to 43-29.
The Cowboys quickly ran the lead to 21 points when Harris hit a 3-pointer to make it 52-31 with 12:12 left.
Mills lead Ball State with 15 points. Micah Rollin scored 13 and Anthony Newell 12 for the Cardinals, who shot just 37.5 percent from the field. The Cardinals did make 19 of 21 free throws.
"We made some mistakes and you can't do that against a Top 25 team," Mills said.
No. 14 Arizona played San Diego State in the second game of the one-day tournament at Cox Arena.
