Davis' double-double fuels LSU rout over Mississippi Valley State
  •

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU coach John Brady was pleased with the Tigers' 92-58 victory against Mississippi Valley State on Thursday night - at least the portion of the game that he got to watch.

Brady was ejected after receiving two technical fouls with 12:16 left and Glen Davis had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 17 LSU over the Delta Devils in the second round of the Hispanic College Fund Classic.

"In the 30 minutes of the game that I saw, I thought our team defended exceptionally well," Brady said. "Even though we held Wright State to 45 points last night, I didn't think our energy was like it should have been."

LSU (9-3), which held the Delta Devils to 40 percent shooting from the field, forced 17 turnovers. Mississippi Valley State (3-8) failed to score for nearly six minutes at the start of the game.

Brady was assessed the technicals after complaining when there was no foul called when Davis went up for a shot following an offensive rebound. Davis then scored after grabbing a second rebound to put the Tigers ahead 62-30.

"I am going to try and coach to the end and I expect the game to be officiated to the end," Brady said. "But, I was wrong. I apologized to the team and they said that it was all right because we all screw up some times."

Davis, who went 7-of-11 from the field, got his eighth double-double of the season before leaving the court with slightly more than five minutes remaining.

Davis, who also had four assists and three steals, slightly injured a knee on his final play.

"I slipped and my knee gave out," he said. "I knew I was coming out and I got a little breather. I tried to get back to reality."

Tasmin Mitchell, who was 6-of-8 from the field, finished with 17 points for the Tigers (9-3). Dameon Mason scored 13, and Darnell Lazare and Terry Martin added 10 points apiece.

Larry Cox had nine points and eight rebounds for Mississippi Valley (3-8).

"LSU is a very talented and physical team," Mississippi Valley State coach James Green said. "They move the ball fast. Obviously, we are not a match for LSU. We have to take this game and use it as an experience to help us somewhere in our league."

Going against a zone defense, the Tigers made six of their first seven field-goal attempts. Three of those were 3-pointers -- one each by Mason, Mitchell and Davis.

Mitchell, Lazare and Davis then scored to give LSU a 15-0 lead.

Mississippi Valley missed its first seven shots from the floor. The Delta Devils' first points came on a basket by Stanford Speech with 14:14 left in the first half.

Martin's 3-pointer put LSU ahead 27-7 with 10:17 remaining before halftime and the Tigers had a 47-21 lead at the break.
