Portland at Oregon

No. 20 Oregon 76, Portland 49
  •

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon guard Aaron Brooks enjoyed watching teammate Maarty Leunen operate on the offensive end Thursday night against Portland.

Leunen scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead No. 20 Oregon to a 76-49 win.

"Maarty is an excellent scorer and it was fun to watch him tonight," said Brooks, who finished with 19 points.

The Ducks, one of four Division I teams still undefeated, are off to a 12-0 start for the first time since the 1946-47 season. They have started 14-0 twice, the last coming in the 1937-38 season.

Now comes the real test for Oregon, which opens Pac-10 play against Oregon State on Saturday in Corvallis, with a potential showdown at McArthur Court against No. 1 UCLA one week later.

"The Pac-10 season is totally different and we will get our chance to step up our game a couple of notches in the next several weeks," said Leunen, who recorded his fifth double-double of the season.

Leunen scored 21 points in the second half and made nine of 15 shots overall. He also has 32 rebounds in Oregon's last two games after posting a career-high 18 in a win against Mercer last Saturday.

Leunen had 18 of the Ducks' 20 points during nearly a 9-minute stretch in the second half that started at the 13:15 mark with Oregon up 48-32, and ended at 4:39 with the Ducks leading 68-43.

Adam Zahn scored 10 and freshman forward Joevan Catron, in his second straight start, grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds for the Ducks.

"We needed this game to get our legs back after the holiday," Oregon coach Ernie Kent said. "It was important for us to get our rhythm back."

Darren Cooper scored 12 points for Portland (3-12), which shot 25 percent (15-for-60) and was outrebounded 54-33.

"Oregon has the defensive ability to take teams out of games and offensive sets," Portland coach Eric Reveno said. "They force you turn the team game into more of an individual style of play."

Chamberlain Oguchi and Tajuan Porter both returned for the Ducks after missing time due to injury. Porter, who was Oregon's leading scoring coming into the game at 18.2 points, played 15 scoreless minutes after missing the last two games with a sprained toe. Oguchi, who missed the last five games with a sprained ankle, scored three points in 22 minutes against the Pilots.
