STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington State had its defense aligned the way it wanted. Stanford had the ball in the hands of its hottest shooter.
Anthony Goods hit a long 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left and matched his career high with 30 points, lifting Stanford to a thrilling 71-68 overtime victory over No. 22 Washington State on Saturday.
The Cougars' Kyle Weaver had 14 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and 10 assists for what is believed to be Washington State's first triple-double in school history. He also had a career-high six steals and helped the Cougars force OT with a late rally.
"It always hurts to lose, but the triple-double is nice stat line wise," Weaver said. "We fought like dogs to get to where we were. We put ourselves in position to win the game."
Ivory Clark scored on a putback of Weaver's miss with 35 seconds left in extra time, then was fouled and missed the potential go-ahead free throw, giving Stanford (11-4, 3-2 Pac-10) the ball back with 29 seconds to play.
Goods shot over Clark for his fifth 3 of the game. Washington State then had 3.3 seconds to inbound the ball from the baseline and go the length of the floor, and Daven Harmeling missed from just over the half-court line at the buzzer.
"I didn't expect Clark to come out there," Goods said. "I just pulled back, with a little hesitation, and just let it go."
The Cougars had a final chance in regulation, but Weaver couldn't control the ball and failed to get off a shot in the last 4.3 seconds. Weaver's triple-double is the first at Washington State since at least 1968-69. Some school records before then are incomplete.
Washington State (15-3, 4-2), which outscored Stanford 10-1 over the final 2:45 of regulation to force OT, had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Harmeling hit back-to-back 3-pointers that pulled the Cougars to 60-56 with 2:16 to play and Clark made a short jumper the next time down. Fred Washington blocked a shot by Weaver, then Washington State used a timeout and Clark dunked off an inbound from Weaver to tie it.
Stanford got the ball at midcourt with 35.7 seconds left and Goods missed.
Lawrence Hill added 15 points and nine rebounds, and Brook Lopez had eight points, 10 boards and three blocks as the Cardinal had their third straight narrow victory.
The wide-open Pac-10 race certainly will see more wild games like this before season's end.
The Cougars, who won as a ranked team Thursday night at California for the first time since Feb. 23, 1980, missed a chance for their first road sweep of the Bay Area schools since the 1992-93 season.
Goods shot 11-for-16 and 5-of-8 from 3-point range for his second 30-point game this season.
"The basket was big for him," said Washington State's Derrick Low, who had 16 points for the Cougars. "When he's kind of on fire, there's really nothing you can do about it."
Clark finished with 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Harmeling had 14 points for Washington State, which might have a tough time staying in the poll next week after this loss.
The Cardinal made it another nail-biter after a pair of one-point victories, at Virginia on Jan. 7 and a thrilling 78-77 win over Washington on Thursday night.
"We played very well," Cardinal coach Trent Johnson said. "We had some breakdowns, but I told the guys that everybody has breakdowns at times. It's how you react to that breakdown that counts."
Stanford took its first lead of the second half on a pair of free throws by Goods with 12:55 left. He then hit a baseline jumper under pressure the next time down the floor for a 38-35 edge. Goods' baskets keyed an 8-0 run that put Stanford up 42-35 with 10:40 to play, causing first-year Washington State coach Tony Bennett to use a timeout.
"I was so proud of the way our kids fought. They expended a lot of energy to get back in the game," Bennett said. "The disappointing thing was I think we broke down defensively a couple of times. ... I just kept saying keep fighting, keep battling, keep your poise."
Washington State had plenty to deal with facing Stanford's 7-foot freshman Lopez twins. Brook and Robin started together for the third straight game but weren't on the court for the final 3:02 of overtime. The Cougars turned to 6-10 Aron Baynes and 6-10 Robbie Cowgill to defend the Lopez brothers, and WSU had outscored the Cardinal 18-10 in the paint halfway through the second half.
The Cougars missed too many shots in crunch time and finished at 41 percent.
Stanford held a 45-36 advantage on the boards, including 23-13 in the first half -- with the Lopez twins combining for 12 of those. But Washington State forced Stanford into nine turnovers to two for the Cougars.
