Mitchell, Martin team up to lead No. 16 LSU to SEC win
  •

BATON ROUGE, La. -- For the second game in a row, LSU's Glen Davis was kept under control on the offensive end. For the second consecutive game, his teammates picked up the slack.

Tasmin Mitchell and Terry Martin combined for 22 second-half points and the 16th-ranked Tigers beat Mississippi 62-55 on Wednesday night.

Mitchell scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half, while Martin had eight of his 15 after the break.

"Tasmin Mitchell has been our most consistent perimeter player," LSU coach John Brady said. "He's playing consistently good. Terry Martin also made some big baskets. They both made baskets out of constructed situations for them."

With the Tigers (13-4, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) leading by one point and less than five minutes to play, Martin and Mitchell both hit big shots.

Martin knocked down his fourth 3-pointer of the game to give LSU a 50-46 lead with 4:44 remaining. On the Tigers' next possession, Mitchell hit a 3 that put them ahead 53-46. Mississippi didn't get closer than five points the rest of the way.

"I knew I needed to make a shot," Martin said. "I came off a screen and I was open. Ole Miss was double-teaming Glen. The perimeter guys knew they had to step it up."

Davis took only nine shots and finished with 11 points, the same amount he had in a 65-63 victory over Auburn on Saturday. He came in averaging 19.2 points per game.

Clarence Sanders paced the Rebels (12-6, 1-3) with 12 points, while Dwayne Curtis had all of 11 in the second half and reserve Kenny Williams added 10.

"We are down by one and Terry Martin makes an SEC-level play off the dribble and makes a shot," Mississippi coach Andy Kennedy said. "Tasmin Mitchell jumps up and sticks a big shot. During those same trips, we don't even get a shot at the basket."

Two baskets by Mitchell gave LSU a 24-13 lead with 7:36 left in the opening half. The Tigers made just one field goal the rest of the half and had their lead trimmed to 29-23. Williams scored six points in the final seven minutes as the Rebels cut the margin to six at halftime.

The Rebels fell behind 34-25 early in the second half but Curtis hit three field goals as Mississippi closed within 37-34.

Mississippi cut it to one point three times in the second half, the last at 47-46 on a basket by Sanders with 5:08 left before Martin and Mitchell hit the 3-pointers.
