STANFORD, Calif.-- Jeremy Pargo saw opportunities and openings and took charge when Gonzaga needed someone to do just that.
Pargo scored 11 of his career-high 23 points in the second overtime and also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, lifting the Zags to a thrilling 90-86 victory over No. 23 Stanford on Wednesday night.
"I just took what was open," Pargo said. "They were making everything for a while. We don't give up. At home in a great atmosphere like this, they're going to make good shots. We just stayed with it and fortunately the shots started falling down."
Derek Raivio added six of his 21 points during the second OT after missing a tough shot at the end of the first extra period to win it. Anthony Goods swished a long 3 from about 26 feet out with 14 seconds left in the initial OT to tie the game at 67 and extend the game further.
The Zags won their third straight and sixth in seven, spoiling the Cardinal's return to the rankings. Goods tried to keep Stanford close, hitting three straight 3s late in the second overtime on the way to 16 points.
But Stanford (14-6) missed too many key shots and free throws in the extra periods and had its three-game winning streak snapped only three nights after a 75-68 upset of No. 5 UCLA.
The Cardinal earned a spot in the poll for the first time since the 2005-06 preseason, and third-year coach Trent Johnson has a ranked team for the first time during his Stanford tenure. The Cardinal are in the regular-season poll for the first time since the team ended the 2003-04 season ranked No. 1.
"What a tough, tough loss," Johnson said. "It was a new situation for us coming off a huge win. We were all excited. We were ready and we were focused. The shots just didn't go down."
Josh Heytvelt hit a key 3-pointer in the first overtime and finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Gonzaga (16-7) and David Pendergraft added 14 points.
Brook Lopez scored 10 of his 20 points in the final 12:47 of regulation and also had 12 rebounds and five blocked shots for Stanford. His twin 7-foot brother, Robin, added four blocks.
Lawrence Hill made his first six field-goal tries and had 14 points in the first 11½ minutes of the game on the way to 22.
It was a tough non-conference matchup for the Cardinal -- the second meeting in as many seasons for the schools -- before they play at rival California on Saturday night. The Zags also won 80-76 on their home floor in Spokane, Wash., last season.
"It was a very, very difficult environment," Zags coach Mark Few said. "Stanford was playing better than anybody out West right now. To come in and get this done on the road says a lot about our team."
Gonzaga, the six-time defending West Coast Conference champion, quickly got back in the game in the second half, briefly going ahead on Raivio's baseline jumper at 17:46 after Stanford missed its first three shots after the break.
"We had a couple of defensive breakdowns and we did not take care of the ball," Johnson said. "We were getting good shots, they just didn't go down for us."
Lopez, last week's Pacific-10 Conference player of the week, and Hill combined to shoot 16-for-32, but Lopez missed a shot with about 35 seconds left in regulation. Pargo then missed a baseline jumper on Gonzaga's last chance.
After Mitch Johnson's 3-pointer with 2:06 remaining made it 59-55 Stanford, Heytvelt converted a three-point play for the Bulldogs. Pargo's free throw at 58.5 seconds tied it at 59.
The Zags have won three in a row since a loss to West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's on Jan. 15.
"They're a great team, but I know we could have beaten them - that's what's going to hurt," Hill said.
Pendergraft's three-point play at 15:22 started a 10-0 run by the Zags, including Heytvelt's 3 from the top with 14:39 to play, that put them ahead 44-36. Following a timeout by Stanford after Heytvelt's 3, Gonzaga came out in a press and Pargo picked off the inbound pass and Fred Washington tried to get a hand in to prevent him from scoring. Washington was immediately whistled for a surprising intentional foul and Pargo converted both free throws.
The near-capacity crowd of 7,178 at Maples Pavilion saw a lot of missed 3-pointers: Stanford shot 10-for-24 from long range and Gonzaga was 6 of 20.
The Bulldogs started the game 2-for-13 and fell behind 19-5, but then made 8 of their next 16 shots. They trailed only 32-27 at halftime despite shooting 32 percent, but did force the Cardinal into eight turnovers.
