Butler at Wright State

Wright State ends Butler's nine-game winning streak; Wood scores 30
  •

DAYTON, Ohio -- DaShaun Wood was outstanding on both ends of the floor.

Wood scored 30 points and held Butler star A.J. Graves to 10, leading Wright State to a 77-65 victory over the 10th-ranked Bulldogs on Saturday night.

"I just tried to contain him and not let him get that extra boost," Wood said. "I did OK at that."

Wright State moved into first place in the Horizon League, bumping Butler from the top spot.

Butler shot only 36 percent from the field, with Graves going 3-for-16 after entering with an average of 17.7 points per game. The Bulldogs attempted 26 3-pointers, but hit only five.

"We knew if we could hold them to five or six that we would be in the game," Wood said. "We knew we definitely had to keep them off that 3-point line."

Wood started slow, scoring only seven points in the first half and leaving the game for nearly two minutes after picking up his second foul.

He and Graves canceled themselves out in the first half, playing tight defense on each other that caused both to force shots. But Wood made up for it with sharp bounce passes that led to easy buckets. And then he got going in the second half, scoring 23 points.

"(DaShaun) is too good of a player to hold down for 40 minutes most nights," Wright State coach Brad Brownell said. "He might not always score 30 points, but there are nights when he has 10 or 12 and has six or seven assists and he has played just as well. Things opened up a bit more for him in the second half and he took advantage."

Butler coach Todd Lickliter credited the Raiders for the way they handled Graves.

"There were things that were just really tough, which was pretty disappointing," Lickliter said. "For the most part, I thought that our guys stayed pretty true in a tough situation. We got beat tonight by a better team. They were a better team tonight."

Wright State (19-9, 12-2 Horizon League) used a suffocating defense to beat the Bulldogs (23-3, 11-2), who had moved into the Top 10 for the first time in school history. The teams split their season series, with Butler winning the first matchup 73-42 last month.

Brandon Crone led Butler with 17 points. Mike Green and Pete Campbell added 13 apiece.

Wright State took control with a 12-point run at the end of the first half, which made it 35-27 at the break and brought the sellout crowd to its feet. Four players hit 3s during the spurt, which put Wright State ahead to stay.

Green led Butler back in the second half, penetrating to the basket and dishing off to open players. Butler got to 62-59 with 3:26 left, but Wood hit a 3-pointer to end the comeback bid and set up the Bulldogs' most lopsided loss of the season.

Wright State shot 55 percent from the floor. Drew Burleson had 16 points for the Raiders, and Jordan Pleiman added 10.
