Oregon downs Oregon State to close regular season on roll
  •

EUGENE, Ore. -- Aaron Brooks savored every last moment of his final game at McArthur Court.

Brooks scored 18 points to help No. 17 Oregon beat Oregon State 70-49 Saturday.

"The game was exactly what I thought it would be," said Brooks, a four-year starter. "It meant a lot and it felt great to give the fans something to cheer about this year."

Brooks, the Pac-10's leading scorer, made his final claim for conference player of the year. He went 4-for-6 from the 3-point line and 6-for-13 from the field overall.

Bryce Taylor scored 22 points and Maarty Leunen also had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Oregon.

The Ducks (23-7, 11-7) won their final three games of the regular season and have won 14 straight against the Beavers (11-20, 3-15) at McArthur Court. Oregon will go into next week's Pac-10 Tournament as the fourth seed and will play Arizona.

"We got some momentum these last three games," Brooks said. "Now we're clicking again."

Oregon's 16 wins at home this season tied the school single-season record.

"We are probably playing at our peak right now heading into the Pac-10 Tournament, but we still have work to do," coach Ernie Kent said.

Taylor was 8-for-13 from the field, consistently getting to the basket for easy scores against the Beavers.

"I just watched film and saw that after three or four passes, Oregon State's defense spreads out," Taylor said. "So I knew I could get in there and get some points. Each game we're going to have a different leader in points and today I stepped into that role."

Tajuan Porter, Oregon's third-leading scorer this season and top 3-point shooter, was held scoreless until he converted a layup with 7:39 to go.

His only 3-pointer gave the Ducks a 64-44 lead with 4:23 to play and tied former UCLA Bruin Jason Kapono's conference freshman record for 3-pointers in a season with 82.

He missed on his final five attempts to break the record and finished with seven points. He made 1-of-9 3-point attempts and 2-of-12 from the field overall.

Marcel Jones had 13 points for Oregon State, which made only eight shots in the first half and trailed 33-17 at the break.

"We couldn't hit a shot," Beavers guard Josh Tarver said. "It was frustrating for us because we were getting good looks and they just weren't going down. If those shots went down, it would've been a different game."

Jones dunked to cut Oregon's lead to 26-17 with 6:34 left in the first half but Oregon went into the break on a 7-0 run.
