STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -Mike Walker scored 14 points and Geary Claxton added 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Penn State to a 60-39 win over Denver on Saturday.
Penn State (6-4) is having a stellar defensive week. Three days after limiting Princeton to the second-lowest points-against total in school history with a 61-38 victory, the Nittany Lions held Denver to the third-lowest total. Penn State's finest defensive game came on Dec. 22, 1989, in a 62-37 victory over Southwest Texas State.
The Pioneers (3-5) went 9 minutes, 59 seconds without a point in the first period, missing six field goals and making eight turnovers. During the span, the Nittany Lions raced to a 21-6 lead before building a 26-10 lead at the half.
Denver struggled with its slow-paced, Princeton-style offense at the start of the second half. The Pioneers didn't register their first field goal of the period until the 12:56 mark. By then, Penn State held a 32-15 lead.
Rob Lewis paced the Pioneers' late scoring push with 14 points. Guard Joe Jackson finished with 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting as Denver made just 12 of 40 shots from the field.
Penn State is 6-0 at the Bryce Jordan Center this season.
