RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -Severin Gates scored eight of his 15 points in overtime to lead UC Riverside to an 86-74 victory over Loyola Marymount on Saturday night.
Gates, who also had 11 rebounds, forced overtime when he converted two free throws with 23.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 70. He then scored six of UC Riverside's first eight points in the extra session.
Aaron Scott scored 15 points, Larry Cunningham added 13 and Sean Cunningham and Chris Johnson scored 12 apiece to help UC Riverside (3-6) overcome a 13-point second-half deficit.
Freshman Orlando Johnson scored a career-high 25 points to lead Loyola Marymount (3-8), and Shawn Deadwiler added 16.
Loyola Marymount opened the second half with an 11-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 51-38, after Deadwiler hit a 3-pointer with 16:25 remaining. UC Riverside responded with a 16-4 run over the next 6:25 and closed within one, 57-56, after Jalonni Diggs made a 3-pointer from the corner.
The Lions built their lead back to eight points over the next six minutes, taking a 64-56 lead, but UC Riverside battled back again. The Highlanders cut Loyola Marymount's lead to one twice more, then tied it twice in the final two minutes to force overtime.
