Pepperdine at Brigham Young

No. 25 BYU 86, Pepperdine 67

PROVO, Utah -- A good way to overcome 29 turnovers, it turns out, is by simply shooting the ball exceptionally well.

No. 25 Brigham Young was sloppy on offense but got by hitting 57 percent from the field, extending the nation's longest home winning streak to 37 games with an 86-67 victory over Pepperdine on Saturday night.

Lee Cummard scored 21 points and Trent Plaisted had 18 points and matched a career-high with 18 rebounds for the Cougars (9-2). Cummard was 10-of-12 from the field and had four blocks and five assists.

"I am proud of our players for how they rallied around each other after how many turnovers we made," said BYU coach Dave Rose. "We made some adjustments at the half that helped us with avoiding turnovers in their press."

Pepperdine (5-7) had 24 turnovers of its own, but only shot 31 percent from the floor and was out-rebounded by the Cougars 46-37.

"We turned the ball over 24 times," said Pepperdine coach Vance Walberg. "We're not going to beat anyone by doing that. When we create turnovers we need to take advantage of them on the other end of the floor, and tonight we didn't do that."

Jason Walberg led the Waves with 17 points, and Malcolm Thomas had 14.

"They're a better team, smarter and more experienced," Jason Walberg said. "They're a Top 25 team and have a lot more experience than us."

BYU led by as many as 22 points on Plaisted's basket with 1:20 left in the game. It was his fourth double-double of the year.

"The heart and soul of our team has a lot of experience in finding the best shot possible," Rose said. "When they pass up a good shot for a better shot, it becomes contagious throughout the whole team. That helped us out a lot tonight."

Plaisted scored six points for the Cougars in a 13-3 run to start the game. The Waves fought back with an 11-2 run midway through the half to pull within three, with Tyrone Shelley scoring five of his 10 points during the spurt.

But Pepperdine couldn't get any closer as Plaisted and Chris Collinsworth scored on consecutive possessions. The Cougars pulled away midway through the second half with a 9-0 run capped by consecutive 3-pointers by Jonathan Tavernari.
